Sjeng Scheijen is a Dutch author, scholar, and Russian art specialist. He is the former cultural attaché to the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Moscow. His biography of Sergei Diaghilev was The New York Times's "Book of the Year" and The Avant-Gardists was the Financial Times's “Best Summer Book of 2024." For The Avant-Gardists, he received the 2019 Bookspot Literature Prize, the leading Dutch nonfiction award. He recently published Gelukskind – The Life of Hans van Manen. He has curated several important exhibitions, notably at the National Gallery in London and H'ART Amsterdam, among others.
Book: ‘Een Ander Rusland’ (Another Russia)
Is another Russia possible? Or is Russia doomed to be an authoritarian state? In an impassioned argument, in which he draws on personal experiences as well as new insights from leading Russia historians, Scheijen shows that Putin's authoritarian, criminal Russia is not a necessity and that history offers more than enough building blocks for a different, free Russia.
