NLMagazine/International - Tea Arciszewska’s play Miryeml was heralded as a powerful memorial to the million children murdered in the Holocaust. Begun in the 1920s in response to the brutal pogroms that followed World War I and completed in the 1950s with intimate knowledge of the Holocaust, Miryeml was celebrated by the postwar Yiddish literary establishment.
Arciszewska deftly incorporates modernism and Jewish folklore in her narrative about children during wartime – one which is both universal and deeply Jewish. In this talk, Sonia Gollance will discuss her translation of this nearly-forgotten modernist masterpiece as part of a broader effort to uncover Yiddish plays by women.
